2010 Covenant Conference
♦ Nov. 4-6
St. Philip Presbyterian Church
♦ Houston, TX

Family of origin, family of choice, church family, blended family, extended family - what do we mean by family? In a recent survey, only 22% of American adults chose the traditional definition, “a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption.”  Nearly three-quarters chose a much broader definition, “a group of people who love and care for each other.”

Families, the most basic social unit, are changing – as they always have. The size, make-up, role, and expectations of families only a century ago would be almost unrecognizable today. And biblical families? Vastly more different still.

Yet God has adopted us into God’s own family. Paul reminds us that “when we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” (Rom 8:15-17). How do we live as part of the family of God – brothers and sisters in Christ?

As people continue to experience “family” in new and creative ways, come explore with us what’s changing, what remains the same, and why families matter so much. We want to hear what you have to say.
