Building a Real Welcome for All God’s People in Stockton, CA

On December 11, First Presbyterian Church in Stockton, CA hosted the Covenant Network of Presbyterians to discuss "Building a Real Welcome for All God's People: LGBTQIA+ People and the Church." This event offered biblical and theological foundation and practical help in ensuring the church’s full embrace of LGBTQIA+ people. Executive Director Brian Ellison traced the history of how Presbyterians have historically thought about issues of sexual orientation and gender identity, and how the denomination has changed over time. Workshops considered particular acts of hospitality that Christians can take in word and deed to strengthen congregations and common life for all people.Lunchtime provided free time and a break but also fostered conversations around tables for people to discuss their own church's inclusivity. In the afternoon session, attendees reflected on table conversations and practical steps to broaden the church's welcome. Suggestions included respect for pronouns, language in worship, facilities issues, how we show hospitality, community engagement, and promotions that particularly highlight the church's inclusive welcome. Finally, the session introduced our work at the Covenant Network of Presbyterians and how congregations and individuals can engage with it.If you'd like to host a similar event at your church, don't hesitate to contact brian@covnetpres.org. The Covenant Network of Presbyterians would love to connect with your church and further the PC(USA)'s mission of welcome for all God's children.
