Allies: We Want to Hear from You

Dedicated allies have worked alongside LGBTQ people for progress in the PC(USA). One prominent example includes Mark Achtemeier who, in the early 2000s, followed a personal journey inspired by Scripture to abandon his opposition of gay rights to speak out actively for gay marriage and a fully inclusive church. When the denomination voted to allow same-sex marriages on 19 June 2014 during its 221st General Assembly, many allies rejoiced along with LBGTQ people of faith to see their affirming vision realized. Still, the work is not yet done. If you consider yourself an ally to the LGBTQ community, here are some questions for reflection that may spur thought and reveal new opportunities for growth: Where do you still hear and see bias against LGBTQ people in your own communities? How has your advocacy for the LGBTQ community changed in the last year? How have your beliefs and behaviors changed in regards to LGBTQ people?Feel free to either respond on our Facebook page or simply spend some time reflecting on these questions.
