New Resource for Implementing Amendments 24-A and C
Recent amendments to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s Book of Order take effect July 4, 2025, following ratification by a majority of the denomination's presbyteries. Amendment 24-A adds "gender identity" and "sexual orientation" to the church's non-discrimination language in F-1.0403. Amendment 24-C requires examining candidates for ordination on their commitment to these principles of inclusion as well as the historic principles of church order.
To support implementation, the Covenant Network of Presbyterians has published a practical guide for presbyteries and sessions. The guide includes sample examination questions: "Tell us about a time you worked closely with someone whose theological views on sexuality differed from yours. How did you maintain that working relationship?" "As an elder/deacon, how would you work with colleagues who may have different theological perspectives on gender identity and sexual orientation?"
CNP emphasizes that the amendments do not mandate specific theological positions but ensure that leaders can serve effectively alongside people from diverse backgrounds and theological perspectives.
