Inclusive and Welcoming: Congregations & Queer+ Christians - Panel Discussion from Heartland Presbytery

Many congregations today are proud of their welcome to LGBTQIA+ Christians. Whether through rainbow flags or “all are welcome” signs, from the outside it seems that mainline congregations don’t face challenges with including queer Christians in their lives together. However, there is a difference between welcoming and including. Through personal narratives and professional insight, this panel brings together three faith leaders who are leading the Church in the work of building inclusive congregational cultures. Inclusion goes beyond mere signage and begins with the challenges of how congregations can fully live into an inclusive vision of the church.

The discussion is hosted by Tripp Fuller, the founder and host of Homebrewed Christianity, one of the most downloaded theology programs in podcasting. He was formerly a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Theology and Science at the University of Edinburgh, and he is currently a visiting professor at Luther Seminary. The conversation explore how churches can foster inclusive cultures by addressing power imbalances and making space for voice and agency of the queer community. Panelists include the Rev. Dale Jackson, Presbyter for Vision & Leadership at Heartland Presbytery; the Rev. Jenny Wells, pastor of Central Presbyterian Church; and the Rev. Brian Ellison, Executive Director of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians.

“At the end of the day, it’s not the polity that moves us forward; it’s about love.” —Jenny Wells
